Special Series > Mesilat Yesharim
The Mesilat Yesharim by Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (1707-1746) is one of the three Mussar Classics of all time (the other two being Shaarei Teshuva by Rabeinu Yonah, and Chovat Halevavot by Rabenu Bechaye). It is said that when the Vilna Gaon died only two Sefarim were found at his bedside: a Chumash and a Mesilat Yesharim.
The Mesilat Yesharim is one of the few works that actually presents a step by step coaching program of spiritual development. Rabbi Luzzatto's program is based on the famous Braaysa of Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair who also outlines a process but in a much more concentrated fashion. What Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair says in two lines of Talmud, Rabbi Luzzato expands into an entire volume. He takes an individual from the fundmentals of Torah learning, through mindfulness, energy, diminishment of ego and so on right to the doorsteps of levels as high as prophecy.
This series serves as an introduction to the work, taking listeners through the deeper meaning and often missed insights of each of its ideas. Its modern day relevance is highlighted, and listeners are taught how to use the work as a manual of self-improvement.
